Replacing Missing Teeth with Dental Bridge

Having a hard time chewing? Is missing a few teeth altering your facial structure? Then you may benefit from getting a dental bridge or a dental implant. Getting a dental implant or a dental bridge can be the answer to your dental problems.

Many people have gone on for long periods of time with missing teeth and felt embarrassed because they talk funny without their teeth. This doesn’t have to happen to you anymore; just contact your dentist. Your dentist should be specialized in restoring your ability to chew and speak properly. She will redistribute the intensity of your bite by replacing the missing teeth with a dental implant or a dental bridge.

Why is replacing missing teeth important?

Each tooth in our mouth has special functions to fulfill and that’s why having full set of teeth is very important for proper functioning of the human body. In our mouth we have 4 different types of teeth with four different functions:

  1. Incisors – They are the front teeth that have a sharp biting surface and are used for cutting and shearing food into small chewable pieces. There are eight incisors in both primary (baby) and permanent sets of teeth.
  2. Canines – The Canines functions is to grip and tear the food. There are four canine teeth in both primary and permanent sets of teeth.
  3. Premolars –  have a flat biting surface. Their function is to tear and crush food. They are unique to the permanent set of teeth which has eight premolars.
  4. Molars – The molars are the largest of the teeth. They have a large flat biting surface. The function of the molars is to chew, crush and grind food. There are eight molars in the primary dentition and twelve in the permanent set of teeth.

So as you see all the teeth in the mouth have specific functions and when we are missing any of those, they need to be replaces. A dental implant or a dental bridge is something that replaces the missing tooth or teeth. We all think that missing teeth which are in the front are surely to be replaced (as a gap in those teeth would look terrible) but the ones which are missing in the back can be ignored and we can live without them; actually they are equally as important in the functionality of the body, especially digestion.

Missing teeth also need to be replaced with artificial options as all of the teeth together support each other and if one is missing the adjacent teeth also lose their support which hold them together. So once the adjacent teeth lose their support they could start moving and eventually get infected or fall off. This can cause a chain reaction which could lead to multiple teeth falling off.

What is a difference between a Dental Implant and a Dental Bridge?

While both of them serve the same purpose they are different in how they are placed and longevity. A bridge is a fixed partial denture, meaning its like a denture but you don’t have to remove it on a day to day basis. Implant is something which is as good as your real tooth and is permanent. A dental bridge has to be replaced after a few years and there are chances of developing decay under the bridge. With a dental implant its permanent and as long as there are no complications it should last lifelong. Since its fused to the bone under the gums chances of infection and decay is minimal. From a cost standpoint, depending on how much bone is remaining (which depends on how long have you waited to get the missing tooth replaced) the implant can be more expensive than a bridge. Its surely more expensive in the short run but in the long run its more cost beneficial as chances of you having to replace is are minimal to none.
